When researching the first Sleeping Bag for your child, you will come across the so-called "TOG value." But what does the TOG value actually indicate?

TOG is a unit of measure that represents the thermal resistance of textiles: 1 TOG equals 0.1 m² K/W. The higher the thermal resistance or the TOG value, the warmer the Sleeping Bag is. The correct TOG value depends on the room temperature in which your baby sleeps. The ideal room temperature is between 16–18 °C.

The TOG value for the ideal sleeping temperature

Manufacturers use the TOG system to help parents choose the right baby sleeping bag for the appropriate room temperature. However, these are merely recommendations for parents. Because with TOG values for sleeping bags, the rule always is:

  • The thickness of the sleeping bag and the baby's Clothing Line should be adjusted to the room temperature and not the season.

  • The room temperature can also vary greatly between day and night, regardless of the season.

Additionally, you should consider that everyone has a different sensation of warmth. For example, your baby might feel more comfortable in a baby sleeping bag with a higher TOG rating. To ensure that the sleeping bag and clothing line suit the room temperature and your child, you should measure your baby's body temperature – here’s how:

Foldable content

Place two fingers of your hand on the back of your child's neck at the collar opening.

If your baby's neck feels cool, your baby is cold.

If the neck is sticky and sweaty, your baby is too warm.

What TOG values are there?

The TOG values are designed for specific room temperatures: Your child's feeling of warmth and the room temperature also determine what your child should wear in the sleeping bag. We show you which TOG value is suitable when:

0.5 TOG

The sleeping bag with 0.5 TOG is perfect for warm summer nights, at room temperatures above 24 degrees. It is unlined and offers pure breathability to reduce overheating and sweating on hot nights. A sleeping bag with a low TOG value of 0.5 provides minimal insulation, which means it retains less warmth. Additionally, they are light and compact, making them ideal for travel or backpacking.

A 0.5 TOG offers versatile uses, as it can also be combined as an extra layer with a warmer sleeping bag in colder seasons.

The sleeping bags are made from skin-friendly materials such as cotton or bamboo, which are not only gentle on the skin but also durable and easy to care for.

A sleeping bag with a 1.0 TOG is perfect for spring or autumn nights at room temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees. It provides the child with balanced insulation in mild temperatures, keeping warm enough without storing too much heat. The 1.0 TOG value is versatile, as the sleeping bags are flexible enough to adapt to changing temperatures.

Although they offer slightly more insulation than sleeping bags with a lower TOG value, sleeping bags with 1.0 TOG are still made from breathable materials to allow good air circulation and prevent overheating.
As with all sleeping bags, the quality of the materials is especially important. High-quality fabrics such as cotton or bamboo ensure a pleasant feel against the skin and increase sleeping comfort.
