Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about baby sleeping bags
We answer your most important questions about our baby sleeping bags:
Why should babies sleep in a Sleeping Bag?
A Sleeping Bag is part of the essential first equipment for newborns. While sleeping, babies like to kick and turn around in bed. A Sleeping Bag always stays in place while still offering plenty of freedom of movement. It surrounds your little one with cozy warmth, keeping their little legs and feet well covered at all times. Sleeping Bags also help maintain an optimal body temperature and protect against overheating or cooling down.
Which Sleeping Bag size is right for my child?
You can find detailed information about the right size in our guide to the “Baby Sleeping Bag size”. As a general guide, you can use the following formulas to determine the right Sleeping Bag size in two different styles:
- pear-shaped Sleeping Bag: shoulder height + 10 cm = approximate Sleeping Bag length
- Sleeping Bag with feet: body height – head length = suitable Sleeping Bag size
A properly fitting neck and arm opening and a close-fitting cut are also important. The motto is: Grow out of it, don’t grow into it!
Which Sleeping Bag is recommended for which temperature?
At Sterntaler, we offer you various Sleeping Bag designs with different TOG values: The TOG value describes the thermal resistance of textiles: The higher the TOG value, the warmer the Sleeping Bag. This means that each Sleeping Bag is suitable for different room temperatures and seasons.
These are our Sleeping Bag recommendations for different temperatures:
- Sleeping Bags for summer temperatures: 0.5–1.5 TOG
- Sleeping Bags for winter temperatures: 2–3.5 TOG
Of course, temperatures can fluctuate considerably during different seasons—so simply test which Sleeping Bag is comfortable for your little one at any given time.
Baby Sleeping Bag with or without Sleeves – Which Is Better?
We’ll introduce you to both Sleeping Bag options, along with their features and benefits:
Collapsible content
Sleeping Bag without Sleeves
A sleeveless Sleeping Bag regulates temperature optimally and keeps your little one reliably warm throughout the night: they sleep warm and safe in it.
Sleeping Bag with Sleeves
A Sleeping Bag with sleeves is also versatile: In winter, the padded sleeves keep your baby’s arms from getting cold. During the transitional seasons, you can simply remove them thanks to the hook-and-loop fastener.
What matters most, however, is the thickness of the Sleeping Bag and the Clothing Line of your little one. In addition to the room temperature, you should always pay attention to your child’s body temperature and sense of warmth in order to choose the optimal Sleeping Bag. If it gets too cool, you can simply dress your child a little more warmly underneath the Sleeping Bag. We offer advice on what your little one should wear underneath the Sleeping Bag on our page “Baby Sleeping Bag – what to wear underneath?”.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Sleeping Bag
How many baby sleeping bags do you need?
It is highly advisable to always have two baby Sleeping Bags in the same size and with the same TOG rating. This way, one Sleeping Bag can be washed whenever needed without compromising your child's sleeping comfort.
What should a baby wear under a baby sleeping bag?
A body temperature of 36.5 to 37.5°C is normal for babies. However, each child’s perception of temperature is different:
Therefore, it’s best to check your baby’s body temperature at the neck while they’re in the Sleeping Bag. Whether a lightweight Body Suit, pajamas, or perhaps just a diaper is sufficient mainly depends on the room temperature and the type of Sleeping Bag your little one is sleeping in.
Sleeping Bag with or without feet – which is better?
Traditional pear-shaped Sleeping Bags for babies are ideal when your child cannot walk yet, but your little one should still have enough freedom of movement while sleeping. In a Sleeping Bag without feet, they can kick to their heart’s content while still sleeping warm and safely.
Sleeping Bags with feet become interesting for your child as soon as they become more mobile . This allows them to walk through their evening routine independently or go to their parents’ bed alone at night without the risk of tripping.
Until what age do babies sleep in a Sleeping Bag?
According to experts, a baby Sleeping Bag is absolutely essential during the child’s first year of life. However, if your child enjoys sleeping in a Sleeping Bag beyond this period, the baby Sleeping Bag can of course continue to be used.
