Buying a baby sleeping bag – what should you consider?

To find the ideal sleeping bag for your little one, you should consider various criteria, which we have listed as a guide:

TOG value
Size
Material
Features

Suitable TOG value:

The so-called TOG value (from the English: Thermal Overall Grade) is a unit of measurement that indicates the thermal resistance of textiles: The higher the TOG value of the sleeping bag, the warmer the sleeping bag:
Winter sleeping bags typically have TOG values between 2–3.5 TOG,
● while summer sleeping bags have values between 0.5–1.5 TOG.

Which TOG value is ideal depends on the season and, above all, the room temperature at which your baby sleeps. A room temperature between 16 and 18 degrees is considered optimal for a relaxed baby’s sleep environment. You can find detailed information in our guide article “What is the TOG value?”.

The right baby sleeping bag size:

Whether it is an all-year sleeping bag, summer sleeping bag, or winter sleeping bag, the baby sleeping bag size is and remains one of the most important criteria. Depending on the shape of the baby sleeping bag, the correct size is determined differently:

● pear-shaped
For many babies, a pear-shaped cut is ideal, offering enough freedom of movement for the legs and feet at the bottom while still fitting close to the body. You can remember the following rule of thumb for a pear-shaped baby sleeping bag:

Body height – head length + 10 cm = appropriate sleeping bag size

Choose the right sleeping bag size

with feet
If your little adventurer can already walk and would like to get out of the crib independently after sleeping, then a sleeping bag with feet and plenty of legroom is perfect. Here, the rule of thumb for determining the size is even simpler:

Body height – head length = appropriate sleeping bag size

Choose the right size for sleeping bags with legs

For both designs, however, the neck opening should be large enough to prevent the baby's head from slipping through it.

Our tip: Our range also includes grow-along baby Sleeping Bags that can easily accommodate growth of several centimeters. The models can be adjusted to two sizes using snap fasteners at the shoulders.

The right material for a baby Sleeping Bag:

Warm, soft and cozy – this is the perfect combination for a Sleeping Bag in which your little one feels completely comfortable. Sleeping Bags made of skin-friendly cotton are therefore particularly recommended. Some of our Sterntaler Sleeping Bags are additionally equipped with HYDROCOOL® microfibers in the lining:
● In summer, they ensure a pleasantly dry feeling on the skin inside the Sleeping Bag by absorbing excess moisture and wicking it away from the body;
● In winter, the lining has the opposite effect and keeps your baby pleasantly warm.
In addition to cozy, quilted cotton Sleeping Bags, inner Sleeping Bags are also popular and can simply be worn inside the Sleeping Bag.

A baby Sleeping Bag for safe sleep

What is best for babies or toddlers to sleep in? Many expectant and new parents ask themselves this question. Does it have to be a Sleeping Bag for the child, or is a blanket enough?

The major disadvantage of a simple blanket is, on the one hand, that little ones can kick their legs free at night and the blanket can slip away as they kick—causing the child to get cold in the crib and potentially wake up. On the other hand, the blanket could cover the baby's face and lead to overheating. This is because babies cannot regulate their body temperature independently during the first few months of life.

A baby Sleeping Bag, on the other hand, offers your little one security and is also recommended to help prevent sudden infant death syndrome. Your baby can kick to their heart's content without the Sleeping Bag slipping or accidentally being pulled over their head. The confined space of the Sleeping Bag—which is still familiar to little ones from the womb—also gives your little one a feeling of comfort and security. In addition, babies lie on their backs in the Sleeping Bag, which is very important for free and safe breathing in newborns.
